Need An Australian-based Server?
What's news for the month of June?

Are you or your customers located in Australia or New Zealand? Do you want to reduce your SSH latency and improve your ping times? If you answered yes to these questions, then I recommend you check out our new RataVPS plans (http://rimuhosting.com/order/startorder.jsp#rata). The RataVPS plans run on hardware located in a Brisbane, Australia data center.

Need Dynamic-IP DNS support?
Our DNS servers now have support for automatic updates (http://rimuhosting.com/dns/dyndns.jsp) from dynamic-IP DNS clients. This means you can have anaddress.yourdomain.com point to a computer whose IP address changes from time to time.

Oh, and our dns UI now supports wildcard dns entries now (e.g. to set one IP address for any domain a user types when you use *.yourdomain.com

Cool Personal Site Contest Winner
A couple of months back we annouced we were holding a 'cool personal site'. We were keen to see how our customers were using their servers with us for their personal and hobby (cf. business) sites.

We had lots of interesting entries. There was a site for tracking 3000 winbolo game results a month (http://www.winbolo.net/index.php) (Winbolo being a favorite game of mine from way back).

There were a number (http://neverlost.org/) of personal (http://www.fanehenderson.com/) sites (http://robertstuart.info/). Including a blog with mathematical formula renderer (http://www.tangentspace.net/cz/page/2/) built in. And a manga translation (http://fugutabetai.com/software/GMAO/) site.

Ultimately we had to choose someone. We are going with Pete Lacey's entry (http://forums.rimuhosting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76#post305) [forum post]. He is running his own email setup using the very nice postfix, hosting friends small business sites, running some interesting (http://wanderingbarque.com/everfixedmark/) blogs (http://wanderingbarque.com/nonintersecting/) not to mention OS/X calendar synchronization using WebDAV. Two months free hosting on its way to you, Pete.

Sparkly New Host Server Kernels
During May we upgraded a few host server kernels to the latest version. We will be continuing those upgrades in June. If your server is affected, you will receive a maintenance notice email before hand. The new kernels address a couple of problems (e.g. some of the newer 2.6 UML kernels will not run reliably on the older host server kernels).

Need JDK1.5?
Some users had been reporting problems with their JDK1.5 installs not working. Their Java apps would 'freeze' and soak up 100% CPU after running for a while. Well, we worked closely with the UML developers and have managed to locate the problem and get a patch issued to fix it. So we can now support JDK1.5. If you need JDK1.5, just pop in a support ticket. As we will need to swap your VPS to the patched kernel.

Regards, Peter
