Some of you may have heard a bit lately about Xen (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/netos/xen/). Well, at least you will if you keep up with such things.

About Xen Xen permits VPS hosting. Its virtualization kicks in at a lower level than UML. Xen performance is excellent. In fact, no other VPS technology outperforms it. Xen is OpenSource. It is backed by 'big boys' from HP and Intel (and Microsoft iniitially, but we won't go there). It is stable. It is at a 2.0.6 revision right now with a 3.0 release coming up in the next few months.

Preparing For Our Xen Launch For the last couple of months we have been testing Xen for its functionality, security, stability and performance. Our tests went very well. We have also created scripts for managing the hosting side of things (and so it works in with our current control panel UI). And for a few weeks we were wrangling servers on the other side of the Pacific trying to get them to 'take' the xen kernel (those issues were resolved after a few hardware changes).

And Launching It As of last week we are now offering Xen VPS Hosting plans (http://rimuhosting.com/order/startorder.jsp). The Xen plans are launched under the MiroVPS tag. We expect most new orders to be Xen orders from now (we can still setup UML-based VPSs for people that need them).

Update: The Xen plans, though so far only available over the weekend have all but sold out two servers already (which is pretty good going). The guys at the data center are wondering what's going on with all our new servers coming in of late. Feedback from customers has been very positive.

Implications For TawaVPS/MataiVPS Customers: It is our medium term goal to convert all TawaVPS and MataiVPS plans to the MiroVPS technology and resources. We will do this as individual host server resources and time permits. The Xen hosts have been running smoothly to date, however we will not convert any UML hosts over to Xen until we have a good period of trouble free operation behind us. Any changes to your setup will be communicated well in advance.

Xen and UML are compatible in the sense that you can take a UML file system, make a couple of minor modifications to it (e.g. replace /dev/udb with /dev/sda in /etc/fstab) and run it as a Xen 'domain'. So it is our expectation that when we begin the migration there will be minimal - if any - disruption.

Moving to MiroVPS servers or Replacing a VPS with a new MiroVPS Server Some of you may be keen to use the Xen hosting right now, rather than waiting for the migration to commence.

If you are one of these people, then you may request we move your VPS to a MiroVPS host server. We will do this when new server resources permit. When we have the servers available you can use the custom support ticket type we have created for this task.

Because of the demand for the MiroVPS plans any move or new order is subject to the availability of host server space. New customers or someone needing an extra server will have priority over someone wishing to replace an existing server. The next priority will be given to existing customers feeling (or causing!) performance problems.

(As at 19 July we are waiting on new servers to arrive before accepting any moves or replacement VPS orders for MiroVPS plans. The new servers should arrive before 30 July).

Anyway, that's our news. We really enjoyed preparing this for deployment, and now look forward to continue providing great Linux hosting backed by our best support efforts for many years to come.

If you had any questions or comments you're welcome to leave them here or contact me via email.

Can you go into more detail about the technical differences between UML and XEN? Will UML users see any difference besides improved performance once they get migrated to XEN?

thanks,

Technically the two are very different. The two project websites will probably describe how each works quite well.

From a users perspective they appear functionally identical.

I think that this policy is not completely fair, especially when I read that customers "causing" performance problems will have higher priority. I wrote you some months ago to report that performance is very fluctuating, although generally acceptable.

Note: this is not a request of upgrade, in fact I can't change IP at the moment (due to a DNS I can't control).

But the worst part is with new customers. I understand that you want to give them priority, otherwise you should block new subscriptions until you have upgraded current accounts. But *they will pay less for more!* and this is not fair at all. I'm paying $39,95/mo. for a 128MB VPS, while they pay $29,95 for 144MB. This should make all your customers close their subscriptions and re-open them. Figure out the consequence.

In order to offer the new resource values (particularly memory) we need some users to move new servers to make more resources available on existing servers. We have ordered a number of new servers so that we will be able to do this.

One we have a solid history with the new technology behind us we will be working within our technical and commercial constrainst so we can install it on everyone's host server and migrate you to the new plan resources. Thanks for your patience while we do this.

I'm wondering if the move would be a good time to upgrade my plan.

For example, I might like to move from a 4GB partition to an 8GB partition and get a second IP so I can run my own DNS server. I assume it would be easiest to make the changes during the transfer...

It's easy enough to resize your file system and add IPs on your current server. Or you can move to a MiroVPS server.

As I said, we do need some people to volunteer to move from each host server before we can migrate those servers to the MiroVPS resources.

We have about a half dozen new servers coming on line early next week. So you can pop in a support ticket to move then, or we can process an upgrade for you at any time.

As an aside where possible, run your DNS on a server other than the one the DNS is pointing to (e.g. use our dns servers). e.g. consider what happens if your IP changes.

If you really want to run a DNS server on your VPS, then consider using our dns servers as the secondaries/slave.

Peter, I'd be more than happy to volunteer to move from host4. It would be to my advantage to move now instead of later because of changes I'm currently making to my site at this time.

Should I put in a support ticket, or wait a week?

Hi. Our new host servers have started to trickle in this morning. So we should have space now to which we can move you. So by all means put in a server move ticket if you wish.

How is migration going? 2005 is near to finish and still no news for your loyal customers (the ones that chose you much time ago). I've read in the Dec. 2005 newsletter that referrals from existing customers is making you sell many Xen-based VPS. So I'm shooting my own foot with my referral credit on www.cromoteca.com that brought you many visits and some orders (without any credit for me since I didn't ask people to mention my server when eventually applying for a purchase).

I'm going to remove that referral today.

We have migrated a number of hosts to xen. Some hosts need to have some users move off before we can switch them to xen. You are on one of those hosts. If you'd like to move to a xen server, just pop in a server move ticket and we will take care of it for you.

I'm willing to move if you need space on my server - if you don't, I'm curious how long it'll be before I'm upgraded. I don't have any pressing need to upgrade, but, hey, free RAM ;)

Would this involve changing IPs?

I emailed you directly about this.

I could move, provided that:

- you don't charge me of any fee, since I accept to move just to let you upgrade the entire server
- you update the DNS when moving to reflect IP changes (I'm using your DNS service on ns1-2.rimuhosting.com)
- you update the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file before rebooting on the new server (again, to reflect IP changes)

Luciano, I'll reply directly to you via email

Note if we control your dns then you just need to mention this on your server move ticket and we'll take care of it for you.

We always update the network info on the vps itself so it starts up with the right IP on the new server.
