Hi. Here is the latest news and info from RimuHosting.com

RDNS Entries

Reverse DNS (PTR) records map an IP address to a domain name. They let you lookup an IP address and have it return a domain name. It is usually a good idea to set a PTR record for your main IP since some (poorly) configured mail servers may otherwise reject email from your server.

RNDS changes can only be made by the person 'controlling' your IP. Historically we passed on RDNS changes to the data center's housing our servers. We are now in the process of making our own name servers authoritative for PTR lookups. This means for most IPs we operate you can make your rdns changes online. Just enter them in our control panel at https://rimuhosting.com/cp/rdns.jsp. For the IP addresses that we control, the changes will be made immediately.

Xen 3.0

We use Xen as the technology behind many of our VPS servers. We have been using version 2.0. Now 3.0 is out and we have started deploying it on new host servers. Results have been mixed so far, with 3.0.0 showing stability issues that we did not see during testing. We are switching 3.0.0 servers to 3.0.1. With 3.0.1 we have yet to hit any problems (knock on wood).

When Xen 3.0 proves itself stable we will be pushing it out to Xen 2.0 hosts. Some of the new features in Xen 3 (i.e. some PAE support) will also enable us to migrate a few more UML-based hosts to Xen. We expect this will result in improved performance for ex-UML users. (Customers will be notified via email about any changes in advance).

Supercharge your VPS

A few people have asked about the process for upgrading their VPSs. We can do most upgrades very simply and quickly. Typically with just a reboot and 1-10 minutes of downtime (and no changes to your file system/IP).

We can add disk space. Just let us know how many extra GB's you need.

We can also add more memory. Extra memory can help you handle higher loads. e.g. Apache uses a certain amount of memory for each connected user. To handle lots of concurrent users you need lots of memory. Also processes like Tomcat/Java prefer having lots of memory available to it. Most 'process dies unexpectedly' support issues we see are a result of VPSs needing more memory.

If you are not sure how much memory you need or would like to minimize the memory used by your VPS, just pop in a support ticket with your root login details and we can take a look for you.

To upgrade, just pop in a support ticket and tell us what you need. Pricing for upgrades will follow the schedule at http://rimuhosting.com/order/startorder.jsp#miro. If you are not sure of the pricing, just let us know when you pop in an upgrade ticket and we'll confirm it with you before making the change.

During February we will waive any pro-rated upgrade costs for the month and just charge the new price starting next month. Just mention this offer on your upgrade support ticket.

Hosting Referrals Appreciated

If you have friends or colleagues that may require Linux or Java hosting and you think our service would suit them, please mention us to them. If they put your name as their referral source when they order we will pop a $15 hosting credit on your next hosting bill by way of thank you.

Do you feel the need to tell the world about your web host? Then we invite you to place one of our 'hosted by' buttons on your web site. You can see our current selection of buttons at http://rimuhosting.com/linktous.jsp
