PHP and GD2

I have some older packages running on my server. I'm interested in updating my version of PHP and also installing GD2 at the same time. What's the best way to do this? Can I use apt-get or should I download and compile these by hand? Will it mess up anything with Plesk if I upgrade the version of PHP?
