Hi.
Welcome to the April 2006 RimuHosting newsletter.
RimuHosting Looking For More Support Staff
Are you constantly twiddling with a new BASH script or 'trying out' different email and web servers? Do you lose sleep due to the excitement of the imminent release of the latest [insert your favorite Linux distro here]? Do you get a perverse thrill from troubleshooting and resolving obscure problems and error messages?
Is so, then I am afraid you may have a Linux addition problem and you should probably seek help from family or friends.
The good news is, that if that does not work out, then we may want to hire you!
RimuHosting is looking for one of more people to cover support between 1000 - 1300 UTC/0600 - 0900 EST on a daily basis.
If you can write clearly, are addicted to Linux, enjoy helping others and want to work for a company that tries its darndest to provide great customer service then I invite you to check out the position details (http://forums.rimuhosting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195).
London- and Brisbane-Based VPS Hosting
Last month we finished setting up a hosting presence in one of the more highly regarded London-based data centers. And we are now happy to announce that we are offering VPS hosting there.
If you have users in Europe then this data center will offer some of the lowest available ping times (i.e. Low latencies) available.
We can move VPSs from our Dallas, New York or Brisbane facilities to the London one. Or we can setup new orders there. For more details, see http://rimuhosting.com/datacenters.jsp#brisbane.
Fedora Core 5 Distro Available
Fedora Core 5 was released in late March. It includes such goodies as PHP5.1, MySQL5 and Apache 2.2.
We have setup a Xen-ized FC5 file system for customers wanting to run this distro. We can set it up for customers with new orders. Or we can do a VPS reinstall for customers on Xen host servers who wish to switch to it (just submit a reinstall ticket with the details).
Our distros page (http://rimuhosting.com/distros.jsp) has information that can help you choose the best distro for you. FC5 is a good option if you like the very latest software, and do not mind doing major upgrades/reinstalls every 6-9 months.
Backup MX Changes
RimuHosting offer a backup mx service (https://rimuhosting.com/cp/backupmx.jsp). You can use this to receive email if your main mail server is down for whatever reason (e.g. During a move, if there are hardware issues, while you make mail server changes, etc).
Until recently our backup mail server has accepted any email sent to your domain. This is in accordance with the email RFCs. What we found though, was that spammers were sending email to our backup mail server, even when the primary mail server was up and running. This resulted in us processing around 40,000 pieces of spam a day. Ugh.
As of a few days ago we have implemented milter-ahead (http://www.snertsoft.com/sendmail/milter-ahead). This plugin permits us to accept email for delivery only if the primary mail server for the domain is down. This has dramatically reduced our backup mail server's email queue. And it also means that your mail server can do appropriate checks on incoming email before accepting it (e.g. Checking that the recipient is a valid user on your system).
All up we expect our use of this plugin to reduce load on our backup mail server. It should also end up reducing the amount of extra spam processed by some customers' servers.
As part of this change we also moved the location of the backup mail server. The IP address changed. This change should be transparent to most users. And there are no configuration changes you would need to make.
Backup FTP Server
RimuHosting provide an FTP server (http://rimuhosting.com/howto/backupspace.jsp) that you can use to backup content from your RimuHosting server (or wherever). You can use this service to backup and restore data as often as you need. This service is included in your hosting plan (i.e. For no extra cost).
We are in the process of moving the backup FTP server to a new machine (with more disk space, more bandwidth and a gruntier CPU).
This change should be transparent to users. e.g. You should not need to change the server name you use in your backups (backupspace.rimuhosting.com). However during the migration to the new server (which we expect will take another day or two) you may receive the occasional FTP-related error while we sync data between the old and new server.
Hosting Referrals Appreciated
If you have friends or colleagues that may require Linux or Java hosting and you think our service would suit them, please mention us to them. If they put your name as their referral source when they order we will pop a $15 hosting credit on your next hosting bill by way of thank you.
Do you feel the need to tell the world about your web host? Then we invite you to place one of our 'hosted by' buttons on your web site. You can see our current selection of buttons at http://rimuhosting.com/linktous.jsp
That is all the news for this month.
Regards, Peter Bryant
