Though it focuses more on Linux desktops (i.e. clients), here's an article that may well interest the Rimuhosting community:
Sun to make Java more Linux-friendly (http://uk.builder.com/programming/java/0,39026606,39310877,00.htm)

I work for Sun in the java SE team.
That article you linked is old .. before Java ONE there was the usual rumoritis wondering what whether (Sun) would "finally" come over to the open source side etc. By now you know that we announced we would open source Java.
However, that announcement was a surprise .. even to those of us in the SE team. I was working on the DLJ project, which is a new license with which we intend to reach out to the Linux distributions. See http://jdk-distros.dev.java.net for more information.
It's the DLJ project which the article talks about.
The DLJ project was announced as part of Mark Shuttleworth's appearance on the Java ONE stage. And then a half hour later (or so) Jonathan and Rich stunned us all with "It's not a matter of 'if' but 'how'" ..
We're in the middle of the open sourcing process now and are expecting to have a release of code "soon" with the rest to follow "later". Unfortunately I'm probably not free to mention the expected dates ...

Thank you for providing this update and clarification. I haven't yet called up the link you provide but I look forward to doing so shortly. Thanks for the information. (Incidentally, the article I cite above was not old at the time of my post which was in May of 2006.)
