I use my VPS to run websites mostly.

At the moment, I'm using Apache, PHP and MySQL to power various stuff including:

e107 (http://e107.org) for a CMS
phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com) for forums
bbClone (http://bbclone.de) for web-based stats
phpSysInfo (http://phpsysinfo.sourceforge.net) for quick overall system status

Other than the webserver, I also have running:
Postfix (http://postfix.org) mailer
ProFTPD (http://proftpd.org)

That's about it, for now. ;)

1st. for hosting mine and my families websites and domains - hoping to branch out soon on a commercial basis
2nd. for back up purposes and also secondary mailservers, family intranet, proxy service etc. hoping to also set up a vpn (prob freeswan) at a later date.

Would it be impolite to ask you guys what plans you are using? For example, if someone comes along this forum and sees that you are running software similar to what he or she wants to run, they might be curious what plan you got (memory requirements for example) to run that software smoothly.

I'm curious about the feedback from any heavy JSP/Struts/JSF hosting folks.

Hi,
I believe that my vps's are the VPS-A ones, which would now probably be the TawaVPS ones.
In my opinion you can get away with actually doing more intensive stuff on these due to the way in which rimuhosting have these vps's set up, i.e; with a minimum of users. For what I use them for they cope very well indeed. However, that said if you need to run JSP etc you would probably need to go higher, but going by mine they would cope very well and more besides! For the record, you can always get a lower spec vps and then upgrade later should you need to on these.
Hope that helps,
kind regards,
Arthur

It did, thank you.

How do you guys all find the bandwidth/speed performance of RimU?

Speed: My site has been extremely fast. I'm really pleased.

Plan: I've got the $40/month plan - I forget the name of it.

What I use it for:

I'm building an N-tier Geodata web application. Currently I'm not running Apache at all. I'm using:

Zope (http://www.zope.org) as my web server and application front-end.

Python (http://www.python.org) as an XML-RPC server doing the computation.

When the app goes live, I'll post a link. I'm also moving a couple of personal sites to this host, and hopefully get into hosting some of my friends' sites.

Very cool Robert, sounds like you are taking full advatage of it. Are you setting up virtual hosts under your 1 Rimu account to host all that stuff?

Yeah - I'm a Linux / Java / Python sofware developer and network admin - so this is really like having my own box online 24 hours per day - what I really want. Web design is something I do because I have to.

Right now I have several domain names that point to my host here. I'm using http://www.dyndns.org for the DNS, although I might end up just doing it myself at some point. (I haven't needed my second IP yet.)

I'm doing the virtual hosting entirely within Zope - it has a very nice HTML management interface, kind of like using Plesk+Apache. And all the sites and configurations are in the one object-oriented database which can be exported easily.

On the httpd, I'm running the Planet (http://www.planetplanet.org) blog aggregator here - http://blogs.techscene.com

I shut down the default sendmail and run Postfix, for my own mail and forwarding some domains.

Sometimes I run the original Python BitTorrent client to download concerts and the like. I then download them via HTTP to bypass a local firewall. I've also run the tracker to seed original content - friends' albums.

Running several personal and small websites, but this box is primarily a development and email server.

Apache, Apache SSL, Horde Webmail (over SSL).

Exim 4 + PostgreSQL for virtual domains + Courier IMAP/POP

ProFTPD for users to manage their websites, although

Websites are running a variety of PHP, Drupal, Webware for Python, and straight HTML. Most make use of PostgreSQL for database storage.

This is on what is now the MiroVPS plan, memory is the biggest constraint - I've had to dramatically limit the number of apache-ssl processes because of memory usage. SSL is currently only for email users though, so this is manageable (hasn't been noticeable as a user yet).

Bandwidth has never been an issue. Disk space may become one in the future.

I host the http://www.thirdgradecrush.com website on my VPS. I also let it handle all my E-mail and a friend of mine has a Circle-based MUD going on it. Whee!

Whoever is reading this topic, you just have to sample some of Emmett's music: http://www.thirdgradecrush.com/music/

He's the only musician I know of that sings about emacs, getting someone kicked out of IRC, and 8bit gaming console addiction.

You'll see his site on slashdot one of these days, beat the crowd so you can say you were a fan 'before he was famous'.

I'am using multiple VPS for offering to SOHO a communication portal allowing them to :
- Manage their web site : changing text, images, ...
- Manage their catalogs : modifying products infos, defining promos, ...
- Create and manage their emailing
- Create and manage newsletter
The main goal is to provide a light service (cost and interface) to give to operational customer (no computer science expert) the capacity to keep their communication up to date...
I am using TOMCAT, W4T and a personnal frameworks developped in JAVA (very powerfull  ) for components assembly management....

Hi...

My plan is the one of 40 USD... I don't remember the name.

I use it mostly for virtual hosting, I currently have near 20 domains or so, and my current configuration is:

Web Server: Apache 1.3 (mod_perl, su_exec)
Ftp Server: Proftpd
Dns Server: tinydns (I've two separated insallations, one for each IP).
DB Server: MySQL
E-mail: Qmail + Vpopmail
Webmail: Squirrelmail (I've installed courier but bind only to loopback because is there just to allow squirrelmail contact with vpopmail database).

I've my VPS for more than a year, at beginning there were a month with lot of issues with my host but since then I'm very pleased with rimu service.

Bandwith has never been an issue, disk space neither, resources are currently an issue.
Also I'm not happy with my configuration and I'm planning to get another server and do a fresh install, probably using postfix instead of Qmail, Vpopmail and courier.

Also I'm playing with webmin using it as central managment (using cluster features) for some firewalls I sold to companies in my city (MVD, UY)

Regards!

Why not...

I'm using my VPS as a mail server, and also to host 4 websites. Two of them are interactive:

www.timechannels.com - web-service vending artificial system clocks - an indispensible testing tool if you have applications that make use of date/time for any functions.

www.jcstudiosinc.com - personal hobby site (model trains) which has now grown to be interactive, complete with user blogs and monthly photo voting contest.

I'm using Apache, Tomcat (JSPs/Servlets), MySQL, Postfix, and Cron.

Cheers,

John
