Looking Back at 2006
2006 has been a very busy year for us. Just so you know what we have been up to, here is a brief recap:
New Dedicated Servers: In November we launched our 'http://rimuhosting.com/order/startorder1.jsp?type=129' Core 2 Duo dedicated server plans. These are co-located at the Dallas data center we use. These servers have been great workhorses.
VPS' on Dedicated Servers: In response to customer demand we have begun (formally) offering 'http://bliki.rimuhosting.com/space/knowledgebase/rimuhosting/vps+setup+on+dedicated+servers' VPS setups on customers' own dedicated servers</a>. This has been great for customers who may have started to outgrow their VPS on a shared server, but wanted a 'no brainer' upgrade path to a dedicated server.
Quarter-Dedicated VPS: In December we introduced a 'http://rimuhosting.com/order/startorder1.jsp?type=256' Quarter-dedicated server plan for customers looking for something in between a VPS and dedicated server solution letting customers have an affordable VPS, with lots of memory and low CPU/disk contention.
RoR: From about July started having customers ask if they could run this thing called 'Rails' on a server with us. Since then I could not count the number of Ruby on Rails setups (http://bliki.rimuhosting.com/space/knowledgebase/linux/miscapplications/ruby+on+rails) we have done for people. If you were curious about rails development, give it a go on your server!
New Staff: We have added some brilliant new guys to our support team (http://rimuhosting.com/support/staff.jsp), including Pablo, Fernando, Shane, Dominic and David. They have been helping out with new setups and troubleshooting problems for customers and it is great to have them adding more depth to our support team.
London Data Center: We had customers that needed a Europe-based server. So we added 'http://rimuhosting.com/datacenters.jsp' London-based host servers to complement our existing Brisbane, New York and Dallas presences.
Xen Migrations: On 27 December we hit a significant milestone, we converted our last UML server to Xen. Waaay back in the misty past (2003) RimuHosting was one of the first companies to use UML to offer virtual private servers. In 2005 we became one of the first companies to offer virtual servers using Xen. And shortly after that we began a long (18 month) process of converting converting UML servers to Xen as the opportunity arose. Now all our VPS hosts are running on Xen - one of the fastest virtualization technologies around. And it is also one of the most popular and well supported. Meaning that over time we feel confident you will be seeing even better performance, more features, and greater stability.
Looking Forward
I do most of our website design, content and coding. During 2006 I spent a lot of time working on our back end systems, making it a bit easier for our support crew to do a better job helping customers. In 2007 it is my goal to add a few cool new features to the customer control panel interface. More on those new features (when they are done and released!) in a future newsletter.
Plus: we are constantly tweaking our offerings, upgrading hardware, and honing our website content.
Looking For More RimuHosting Staff
We have had a big growth in customer numbers in the last 12 months. This is in part due to the growing popularity or Linux virtual servers, and partly in thanks to the many kind customer referrals we have received.
More customers mean more work. We pride ourselves on the quality of our customer service and there is no way we ever want our standards to drop. So we are looking for more part-time support staff (yes, again!) to keep up with our growing workload. We are looking for ultra-smart Linux people who can troubleshoot and solve any problem thrown their way. And they will need to provide friendly, professional support.
It would be a great opportunity to do hands-on work with a wide variety of Linux apps and services for a really interesting and varied bunch of Internet-focused customers. The position can be filled remotely (though if you wanted to live in Cambridge, New Zealand we have a desk set aside for you).
Does that sound like you? If so check out the details over 'http://forums.rimuhosting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195' in our forums.
Do you have a brilliant, hard working friend or colleague that may fit the bill? If so, send them our way. If we hire them, let us know and we will pop a $300 hosting credit on your account.
Looking for More RimuHosting Customers ;)
'Server Virtualization' is shaping up to be one of 2007's buzz technology. Big players like IBM and Microsoft are getting in behind it. Data centers are dependent on it in order for them to balance the ever growing demand for servers with the limited supply of space and power. And the virtualization software developers and chip makers are improving the technology every month.
If you have a technically-minded friend or colleague who has been lumbering along with a shared hosting plan somewhere, talk to them about the pros and cons of having their very own server. We would love to host them. And there has never been a better time for them to start playing around with their own virtual server.
If they mention your name when they sign up we will put a $15 hosting credit on your next month's bill.
Looking to Make the Most Of 2007?
What are your plans for 2007? Are you going to be adding new sites? Or redeveloping new ones? Experimenting with new languages or applications? Tweaking your mail server features and settings? Installing forums or galleries or CMSs or blogs on existing sites?
Whatever you need to do I'm pretty sure our servers can cope. If you ever get stuck setting something up, the guys on our support team are only too happy to lend a hand.
So if you need assistance making the most out of your server, just pop in a <a href='http://rimuhosting.com/ticket/startticket.jsp'>support ticket</a> and tell us how we can help.
Regards, Peter Bryant
