Welcome to the March 2008 newsletter. We try not to overload peoples inboxes with too many newsletters. (The last one we sent out was in January 2007).
If you would prefer not to receive newsletters in future you can opt out at [[newsletterprefsurl]]
h1 RimuHosting Turns 5!
Way back in March 2003 I launched the rimuhosting.com website. Back then it was just me and one server. And a mid-90's website design.
This month marks the 5th year that RimuHosting has been providing Linux hosting. Over the last few years we have set up thousands of new servers and customers. Responded to 80,000-odd support requests. And recruited a brilliant team of Linux-obsessed support sysadmins.
We were one of the very first UML-based VPS hosts, then later one of the original Xen-based VPS hosts. During that time we have gone from 2.4 to 2.6 kernels. We have gone from distros like RedHat 8 to the sparkly new Ubuntu 7.10. And we now have servers in data centers at Dallas and New York (our primary two presences) as well as London, Brisbane and very soon Sydney.
Heading into our 6th year of Linux server hosting we are determined to continue working hard to delight new and existing customers with our service and support.
h1 Looking Back at 2007
Growing Fast Deloittes named us 25th fastest growing company in New Zealand in 2007. We also got listed on the Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific List (which includes technology companies from Taiwan, India, Korea, Japan and Australia).
Extra Staff I consider the brilliant guys we have providing support our biggest asset. As the number of our customers has grown, we have brought on more staff, including John, Adrian, Brandon, Jamon, Alex, Felicisimo, Abdallah, Ivan, Ghassan, Elton, Paolo, and Glenn. With the extra personnel we are better able to cope with peak support periods and we have pretty solid around the clock coverage.
More Servers We more than doubled the number of physical servers we host since the Jan 1 2007. We have seen some great hardware advances over the last year. And that has allowed us to introduce new dedicated server models (e.g. quad core Xeons and Core 2 servers). And beef up our newer host server specs. The new host servers now have two quad core CPU Xeons, 32GB of memory, and an almost embarrassingly vast 3TB of disk.
Data Center Changes We are adding more cabinets at the Colo4Dallas data center we use (about one to three new cabinets a month at recent rates). In February we bumped up one of our incoming network links there to a gigabit fibre connection. Which gives us more resilience to handle load spikes and attempted denial of service attacks.
Support Tools We have written some tools that help us better manage our support queue. One of these tools let's you see the status of any support ticket or email you have sent in recently as well as giving us some stats about our support response times. e.g. over the last month we received support requests at the rate of 3-13 per hour. We assessed most new requests in under 2 minutes and responded to them in under 41 minutes.
Automated VPS Uprades We wrote a resource change tool that lets you change the amount of memory and disk space on your VPS. So you can use that to scale up and scale down your server on demand.
Maintenance Notice Alerts You can now add your email and TXT address on a maintenance notice alert page and then when we add a maintenance notice added that relates to your server you will be notified.
h1 Like Our Service? Mention It To A Friend
Do you have a technically-minded friend or colleague who may want their own Linux server? We would love you to tell them a bit about what RimuHosting can offer them.
If they mention your name when they sign up we will put a $15 hosting credit on your next month's bill.
h1 Making the Most Out of Your Server?
What are your plans for your server? Are you going to be adding new sites? Or redeveloping new ones? Experimenting with new languages or applications? Tweaking your mail server features and settings? Installing forums or galleries or CMSs or blogs on existing sites?
Whatever you need to do I'm pretty sure our servers can cope.
If you ever get stuck setting something up, the guys on our support team are only too happy to lend a hand. If you need assistance making the most out of your server, just pop in a support ticket and tell us how we can help.
