View Full Version : Who's hosting the most active/used site? Any game servers?
I thought it might be interesting to see who here is hosting community sites that are active. Its a good way to learn about eachother and other great resources.
Hey has anyone thought to host a game server from a RimU VPS?
rsk,
Along with a few small business websites, webmail, and other things
I am hosting a game on my server. I wouldn't consider it very CPU or
bandwidth intensive, but it does consume a small amount of RAM. The
game is simply a text-based MUD written in C. Visit http://quietus.org
and follow the relevant links if you want to learn more about it. :)
I'll probably start hosting one or two more MUDs in the near future.
Hmm very cool.
I'm wondering if the memory requirements for mainstream game servers (HL, UT, etc.) are too high to use on a VPS or if there is something in the contract about it?
I think that I have a VPS-C account, or what they are now calling RataVPS. So I have 96MB of dedicated RAM, not shared with other rimu accounts, and have never had any complaints from the rimu admin for using it violently. On the other hand I am very careful not to use any more CPU time than I need as this is obviously shared across many accounts (and a MUD uses almost no CPU time). I think that could be the clencher for other types of games.
Obviously some comments from rimu admin/support could be useful here. :?:

We assess things on a case by case basis. We try not to impose arbitrary rules about what software you can and can't run.
If you can run a game server and not overload the host server, then its fine. We monitor the host server CPU and if it starts creeping up there we take a closer look at the CPU usage of individual VPSs. Then follow up with an email to see what can be done to alleviate the load a bit.
You get a bit more leeway on the RataVPS plan because it is targetted at tinkerers and developers.
All that said: my guess is that running game servers like UT or BF1942 (or whatever its called) are probably too resource intensive for the VPS.

While I agree with you *theory*, we won't know until we try, will we?

We don't have arbitrary bans on things. By all means try it out. I'm just predicting it will probably be too CPU intensive.
If you do experiment with something like that, please let us know. Then we can check resource usage levels and let you have a feel for how much load its causing.
Be a good neighbor to the others on the server. Try to keep your load to the minimum level that works for you. If you run something intensive try to only do it for a short period.

Well I think that hosting a game server of the likes of UT or HL would not be a good idea. They are very CPU and Memory intensive games. On a Dedicated server they would be fione but not on a VPS. I looked into that myself and it just wont fly.
I am running a forum, TeamSpeak Server, Website download section and a game server query script and it seems like I need to give the guys at Rimu some more money for disk space and RAM, cos I need it I get about 20,000 hits a month and this month is at 19,000 already so I dunno why but more people are coming. Total so far since I have been with Rimu is 4760260 hits. Not too bad for my little corner of cyberspace
