Anyone have recommendations/install notes for upgrading to jdk 1.5? Experience any difficulties in getting it to work w/ your VPS? I'd also like to upgrade tomcat to at least tomcat 5.5 - any tips would be appreciated.
I'm currently using jdk 1.4.2_02 and tomcat 5.0.
Cheers -
Chris

Hi Chris. I've seen lots of problems with people running JDK1.5 on the VPSs. I think the problem is some wierd interaction between the VPS kernels and the JVM. There is no issue with JDK 1.4.
I am hopeful that some recent VPS kernel patches will resolve this. In the meantime, stick to the 1.4.2 kernel.
Tomcat 5.5.7 works just fine on the VPS. If you'd like to install it, consider using this script:

Bummer! I've just ported my web application from Python to Java 5. Now I was beginning to look at how to get Java 5 and Tomcat 5 running on the hosts here for deployment.

OK. After working closely with the UML developers we have managed to create a reproducable test case of the jdk1.5 problems, and they responded with a kernel patch. That patch appears to resolve the jdk1.5 issue we were having. If anyone needs to run jdk1.5 now, just pop in a support ticket so we can make sure you are using the correct kernel.

I have been running jdk1.5 for couple of month already on my server with no problem at all,
and app performances are faster .

FYI now we're running Xen everywhere this becomes a non-issue. (JDK1.5 works fine anywhere)
