Got RedHat 9 and want to use WhiteBox Enterprise Linux 3 (based on RHEL3 src RPMs)? Got FC2 and want to go to FC3? Want to switch between Debian and WBEL3 (or vice versa)?

It is possible to apt-get dist-upgrade in some cases. But in our experience this has often been fraught with problems. Some of the problems can be worked through, e.g. via the SSH console access. But other problems require the kinds of hands on care not possible without RimuHosting staff involvement (e.g. booting into single user mode, mounting temporary file systems, etc). e.g. going from FC2 to FC3 requires the /dev tree to be recreated with MAKEDEV and udev startup removed from rc.sysvinit.

Our recommended two distro upgrade options:
1) Order a new VPS. We'll set it up from scratch with your preferred distro. You copy the files you need to the new server. And redo the config. Then when you are happy the new server is ready, change your DNS to point to the new VPS. Then cancel the service on your original VPS. We'll shut it down at the end of the calendar month.

2) Pop in a support ticket and ask us to reinstall your VPS with your preferred distro. We will do a clean OS install on your server. And we will mount your original file system at /backups. We will keep it there for 5 days (longer if you need it) while you move everything you need from /oldroot to your new file system.

In either case, if you can tell us what files and config settings need bringing over we can often help doing that.

With the second option there will be a $10 re-setup fee. Sometimes we will waive this fee (e.g. if your original file system is many months old, and we don't need to do that much extra work to get things running on the new distro).

If one were to go for option no 1, could the new VPS be set up with the same hostname as the old VPS?

Thanks

Yep. You can use the same hostname.
