Been using rimuhosting for a very long time (I think I was the first debian user, but maybe I kid myself), and love it of course, but I've never used the forums. Well, here goes . . .

Friend and I are looking to setup a small ecommerce site. I'm fairly experienced with php/mysql as well as all the standard linux tools, and I even am un-humble enough to think I could probably write my own shopping cart system, but that sounds like reinventing the wheel. So, I'm looking for a good pre-built solution. OSS is preferable but not a deal-breaker.

Currently I've been checking out zencart (http://www.zen-cart.com) and oscommerce (http://www.oscommerce.com) with a little preference for zencart because the code looks somewhat cleaner.

I'd be very interested in thoughts, suggestions, experience, etc...

Best,
Sam

Hi!

I've set up a few oscommerce installations, here are the pro & contras i saw:

Pro:
- Works very stable after is well configured and no one screw it using the administration.
- It's highly customizable.
- All features works as expected.

Contra:
- I wasnt able to leave administration of oscommerce completly to customers due to the power & complexity of oscommerce administration.
- I had to hack the oscommerce code to hide most administration options and take safe default values for them because customers, it's very easy using the administration to screw it.

My two cents

regards,
